When we’re putting together our chest rig, battle belt, or packing our go bag, we always carefully consider the gear that we need, but do we consider the gear that we need should our first line gear fail, our backup gear? The Wuben T2 is just that, a powerful little backup tactical flashlight for when your primary flashlight dies.

The T2 tactical flashlight is a cub among the pride, but a lion nonetheless. It’s got the same DNA, just a little less bite.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The box of the T2 is sadly unimpressive in design and gives off a more tool feeling than a high-end flashlight feel.

The T2 is small, slim, light and yet very solid. The high-grade aluminum, like many tactical flashlights, makes the body of the T2 strong and very durable.

The tail cap and main body have decent yet unaggressive knurling on them for increased grip in poor weather conditions or with gloves on.

The tactical switch on the tail has good stippling and a very good press and detent to it. The bottom of the press offers a solid click, letting you know the button has been fully depressed.

The function switch on the side of the T2 near the top also has a soft, quick press to it and a nice audible click at the bottom of the press.

The T2’s detachable belt clip is extremely stiff and strong and would hold nicely to any belt or piece of gear with MOLLE.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX

In the box with the T2 tactical flashlight, Wuben has put in the operating instructions, two extra rubber o-rings, and a well-made wrist lanyard.

FIELD FIRSTS

The first time I took the T2 out in the field to use it, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would throw a lot less light than it did.

I was doing security rounds on base and used it in the vehicle bays to see around, and it lit up a good amount of space in front of me.

Its light output is nothing like Wubens T1 or some other mainstream tactical flashlights, but the T2 is only meant to be a backup flashlight for when your main torch goes down.

But as a backup, the T2 more than outperforms. With its 550 lumens, the T2 is like an old-school cops ankle-holstered .38 special revolver. It’s only meant as a backup, but it can still get the job done.

QUALITY AND DESIGN

BELT CLIP

Wuben made the belt clip on the T2 excellent. Both ends are rounded up, which lets you easily slip it onto your belt or a MOLLE system without fighting with it because the ends are stuck and catching.

The steel is well folded to form a tight fit, which holds the T2 snug to whatever you attach it to.

The clip is also reversible, meaning it can be removed and swapped to the other end of the T2.

BODY

The body of the T2 tactical flashlight is made from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. 6061 offers high corrosion resistance and is almost as strong as some steel.

The whole body of the T2 is covered in a semi-gloss anti-abrasion finish. This gives the T2 a nice, slick look while also increasing its functionality.

As mentioned before, the head, body, and tail have moderate knurling on them to aid the user in gripping the T2 in slippery, wet, and cold conditions.

COOLING FINS

The cooling fins on the T2 tactical are quite minimal. Whereas the candela is a determining factor in whether a flashlight is a good flashlight.

The amount of lumens a light throws out really determines how much heat it produces. The T2 throwing out only 550 lumens produces very little heat.

This is good, though, as the minimalistic cooling fins keep the body nice and slim.

the wuben T1 and T2 tactical flashlights have much different sized cooling fins

SWITCHES

The Wuben T2 tactical flashlight has two switches. The main tactical switch is on the tail of the T2, and a function switch is on the side closer to the head of the flashlight.

Both switches on the T2 are very well constructed. The tactical switch on the tail takes a good 2-3 lbs of pressure to press the switch all the way down. This ensures accidental presses don’t happen.

The tail switch has a partial press, which gives you a “momentary on,” or the full press, which gives you your “constant on.”

The tail switch only gives you access to on and off, however, and doesn’t actually give you access to the strobe function.

That’s where the function switch comes in. The function switch lets you step up or step down the flashlight through its four different lighting modes.

Holding the function switch down for a moment gives you access to the strobe feature of the T2.

The functions switch has a soft press but a solid audible click at the bottom.

STRIKE BEZEL

Like all good tactical flashlights, Wuben has placed a strike bezel on the head of the T2. It, like the rest of the flashlight, however, is quite small.

In an emergency situation, such as entering or exiting a vehicle, the T2 strike bezel would still be better than your hand.

However, with no real weight behind the T2, it would still be quite a task.

You can see how small the teeth are on the T2 strike bezel when it’s next to the T1. The T1 can easily be used as an ingress or egress tool, and the T2 is really only a last resort.

If you ever had to use the T2 as a trike tool, you’d want to ensure you had gloves on and held the T2 as far from the strike end as possible.

BATTERY

Unlike many tactical flashlights these days, which have moved away from traditional alkaline batteries, the Wuben T2 still uses standard double AA batteries.

As a backup flashlight, this offers its operator some great advantages.

  • No need to find a place to charge it;
  • keeps the cost of the T2 way down;
  • and you can always carry extra AAs for when the batteries start to die.

At first, I wasn’t a big fan of this, but I have realized the benefits of having your backup flashlight run off a different power source than your main flashlight.

When one power source fails, you have a second one. Wuben also gave the T2 a 450-hour max runtime from just two AA batteries.

So carrying a small 1-2 lb pack of eight double AA batteries can make the T2 last extremely long in an emergency or survival situation.

LIGHT

Wuben has used a German-made P9 LED in the T2 tactical. It throws out 550 lumens to a distance of 107 meters.

What it lacks in real tactical prowess, it makes up for in toughness and reliability.

FUNCTIONALITY

The Wuben T2 tactical is a solid functional backup flashlight. Its extremely slim body and small profile mean that the T2 can fit into nearly any pocket on your person in your pack.

It takes up almost no space wherever you store it, and its light weight means you never feel overburdened when carrying it.

The T2’s anti-abrasion, anti-slip finish, and IP68 rating make it suitable for any environment. It won’t come out of your hand and can handle all the bumps and bruises from being in the field.

Its moon mode makes it suitable for environments where minimal light is a must, yet its high mode can still throw out decent light when needed.

As a small “break in case of emergency” tactical flashlight, the T2 is a very functional light.

WHAT I LIKE BEST

I really enjoy three main characteristics of the T2. The first is the build quality. The T2 is one of Wuben’s cheaper flashlights, so they could have easily made it cheaper.

As soon as you hold it and use it, though, you can tell the same level of quality that goes into any more of their more expensive flashlights was also put into the T2.

The second is the tail switch. It’s very functional and works very well. The partial press is easy to achieve because the button is quite firm, so the momentary on feature is also easy to use.

When pressed all the way, the solid detent and click are very satisfying

Lastly is the size. I really like how small of a profile the T2 has. It is very narrow and very light, so it takes up no space. It easily fits into my plate carrier pouches, clothes pockets, or any of my backpack pouches.

CONCERNS AND CRITICISMS

Even though the T2 is meant to be a backup to your primary tactical flashlight purely, there are some features I would have still liked to see.

Like Wubens T1, which has a multi-function tail switch, I would have also liked to see the same idea on the T2.

With how good technology is today, I’m sure Wuben could have placed either a dual ail switch or a multi-function tail switch on the T2.

I would have also liked to see an instant strobe capability. Relegating the strobe to the function switch and only when the T2 is already turned on makes the strobe feature pretty much useless.

Finally, I would have liked to see a more focused lens on the T2. The candela matters much more than the lumens in a tactical flashlight, and 550 lumens could have been much more focused into a blinding light.

CONCLUSION

The Wuben T2 tactical flashlight has one job and does it very well. That job is to back up your primary tactical flashlight.

As a backup tactical flashlight, the T2 is right at home. It doesn’t give you everything your main light will give you, the same way a cop’s ankle piece doesn’t give him everything his main sidearm will.

In the end, though, it gets the job done, and you’re thankful you had it.

The T2 is tough and durable and has a profile that is slim enough to fit anywhere. It can handle any environment, and with replaceable batteries, you never have to worry about finding a place to plug it in to charge it.

Flashlights are essential to our EDC, and carrying a backup like the T2 is always a good idea, yet it is too often forgotten about.
