VERDICT SNAPSHOT

If your goal is speed over security, and your operational environment is on the warm side, then YES, the GORUCK MACV-2 are completely worth every penny.

Overall, the MACV-2 is an impressive boot in its area of expertise. It’s lightweight, comfortable, breathable and the boot grips like Spiderman.

The speed lace system works great for quickly lacing up your boots, and they don’t bite into the top of your foot, even when tightened and snug.

The widened toe box for rucking can take some getting used to if you usually wear a standard boot that fits snugly around your entire foot, but you’ll fall in love with it on your first ruck while wearing them.

And although the speed lace system is one of the best, the metal lace loops wear through the narrow laces quickly.

Hands down, though, one of the absolute best jungle boots ever made.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When I first pulled the boots out of the box, I think what stands out the most is how the MACV-2 feel like there’s nothing to them.

The material making up the upper is so thin that, compared to nearly any other standard tactical boot, they feel as light as a feather.

The aggressiveness of the tread stands out right away, definitely one of the selling points for me, as it looks beastly.

Instantly, the MACV-2 gives off the impression that this is how a jungle boot is supposed to be.

HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON

SALOMON XA FORCES JUNGLE VS GORUCK MACV-2

Another heavy hitter in the Jungle tactical boot community is the Salomon XA Forces Jungle boot. It is a favoured boot among Canadian military door kickers.

However, when it comes down to the bare bones of what a jungle boot should be, who comes out the winner?

First, let’s say what a jungle boot should be. A jungle boot has to be above all else lightweight. It also has to be breathable and dry quickly when wet.

As far as weight, the MACV-2 takes it at 32 ounces a pair versus the Salomons’ 42 ounces a pair. In a game where pounds equal pain, those 10 ounces make a big difference and can be felt as soon as you put them on.

Both the GORUCKS and Salomons are made from very thin, single-layer materials, making them generally very breathable.

Salomon, however, has added numerous reinforcements around the base of the foot, and on both the instep and toe of the boot.

As nice as these reinforced areas are at protecting the foot, they do add weight and detract from breathability.

Lastly, drying when wet. I actually found the Salomons dry quicker than the GORUCKS. I believe it’s actually due to the leather and rubber reinforcements.

The MACV-2, although lighter, are all nylon and suede leather, so they absorb and hold water more, whereas the Salomons are largely PU-coated leather and rubber, which don’t absorb water.

In the end, both are very strong contenders in the tactical jungle boot category.

The GORUCK MACV-2 takes two out of the three main categories tactical boots need to be considered, jungle boots, with the weight being the most important.

Making the MACV-2 the clear winner in this head-to-head comparison.

TERRAIN, CLIMATE, LOAD

The GORUCK MACV-2 excel in numerous areas.

As far as terrain goes, the MACV-2 were created by Green Berets to be the best rucking boots on the planet. This allows them to excel in urban terrain.

Thanks to their highly aggressive tread, though, they also do great all the way up to rugged terrain.

The soles are a bit softer than other tactical boots, however, so a boot with a stiffer sole and a plank in the sole would be better for mountainous jagged terrain, mainly for foot protection.

As jungle boots, they excel in cool to extreme desert climates. But from firsthand experience wearing them in Canadian winters, as expected, they do nothing for your feet in sub-zero temperatures.

When it comes to foot comfort and health while carrying a load, they again excel, as this is what they were created for. Rucking long distances with a heavy pack.

GORUCK MACV-2 performance overview

IN THE TRENCHES

So, right off the bat, I’ll admit I didn’t like the MACV-2 when I first started wearing them. The widened toe box meant for rucking is what I noticed first as I started wearing them, and it felt strange to me.

Overall, they were comfy, snug in the heel and around the ankle, and were aesthetically very nice, but that wide toe box just felt funny.

That was until I did my first real ruck with them, and about 5 km in, my whole attitude changed. I noticed how cool and comfortable my feet felt, and instantly my attitude changed.

Although it still took me a bit of time to get used to how the wide toe box felt, I loved it, and they became my permanent rucking boots.

Aside from the toe box giving me that initial concern, the fit and comfort were awesome, and they performed flawlessly.

The MACV-2 squish all the water out, although the material itself can hold onto the water for a little while

BUILD BREAKDOWN

MATERIAL

The majority of the boot is suede leather. This is a lighter material than rough or full leather, but less durable. Around the ankle, however, is 1000D Cordura nylon, which is considered ballistic nylon.

These materials ensure that the MACV-2 is lightweight yet extremely durable, a tricky balance to find, but one that GORUCK has done quite nicely.

LACE SYSTEM

The MACV-2 has a full-speed lace system. This makes them super easy to tie up quickly when in a pinch. You get bumped at night, and you’ll have no problem throwing these on.

That being said I suggest you tie a knot in the end of each lace, because as easy as they are to tie up, they come out of the steel eyelets just as easy.

One of the main issues the MACV-2 have is the 3mm lace they come with. The small lace makes them function great in the speed lace system, but they wear out super quickly.

The 3mm laces are not very tough or wear-resistant, and they fray and break quite easily. I suggest getting a backup pair or two right out of the gate.

WEBBING

The MACV-2 have a 2-inch nylon strip right across the ankle, intended to strengthen the boot and provide stability to your ankle.

This style of reinforcement is pretty common because it’s strong and works well, so you can be assured it’s tried and tested.

the GORUCK MACV-2 has a large strip of nylon webbing on either side of the ankle for strength and support

TONGUE

GORUCK gave the MACV-2 a thin 1000D Cordura Nylon gussetted tongue.

The nylon ensures the tongue is extremely strong and will most likely never tear. With how thin it is, it also won’t absorb and hold water.

However, because it’s so thin, it provides no cushioning for the top of your foot. The gussets on either side of the tongue protect your feet and prevent any dirt or debris from entering your boot.

the GORUCK MACV-2 has an extremely thing tongue whos only purpose is to prevent things from falling into your boots

TOE BOX

GORUCK specifically designed the toe box of the MACV-2 for rucking, a feature not found on other tactical boots. The toe box is made to be slightly wider than normal.

GORCUK did this because as you ruck and spend countless hours on your feet, they swell, and this widened toe box prevents friction, rubbing, and therefore blisters.

The wider toe box does feel different than other tactical boots and can take some getting used to for some people, though in the end, most will find it quite comfortable.

MIDSOLE

Made from standard EVA, GORUCK took the midsole-to-sole relationship of the MACV-2 extremely seriously, aiming to give users a full sole they could be on all day without their feet tiring.

GORUCK designed the MACV-2 midsole to wrap around the entire upper, providing as much support and stability as a jungle boot can offer.

SOLE

The sole of the MACV-2 is one of its premium and most unique features, featuring a triple-compound rubber and each sole section designed for specific purposes.

The front third of the MACV-2, the ball of the foot, has been designed like a mudding tire, with deep treads meant to grip the ground while shedding mud and debris.

The midfoot was created from a rock-climbing compound and hardened, offering incredible abrasion resistance and making it perfect for tasks such as fast roping.

The heel was made denser than the rest of the sole, with an expanded heel strike area for increased durability so that it won’t wear down nearly as easily over time.

SPECIAL RUCKING DESIGN

GORUCK wanted the MACV-2 to be the premier rucking boot on the market, and in my opinion, they nailed it. Adding unique features that I haven’t seen in any other boot in my entire career.

The wide toe box was explicitly created to prevent feet, swollen, from hours of walking from chaffing within the boot and to allow for breathing and comfort.

A widened heel sole for ease of walking, which has been created much more densely to prevent wear and tear from time and distance.

An overall extremely light boot to reduce fatigue, enhancing the user’s comfort and capability.

As I said at the beginning, I was unsure about the wide toe box, but then I took them on their first ruck, then their second, and then their third, and all my concerns were gone.

I sat down at the end of one of my rucks and actually marvelled at how comfortable the boots felt and how good the wide toe box felt.

COMFORT

One of the main concerns with jungle boots is always comfort. Jungle boots are made so thin and light that, unless they’re made well, they can be terribly uncomfortable.

GORUCK did a fantastic job providing solid comfort in such a lightweight boot. Whether you are wearing them in the field, around garrison, or even as part of your civilian attire, your feet will thank you.

The comfort of the MACV-2 is delivered by the triple-compound rubber sole, as previously mentioned, the injection-moulded heel counter, the dual-density insert, and the suede upper with nylon webbing.

These combine to make the MACV-2 a boot that can be worn all day, every day.

GORUCK MACV-2 is extremely comfortable

MY TAKE

SUPER AGGRESSIVE TREAD

The aggressive tread on the MACV-2 was one of the main selling points for me when I purchased them.

Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but as I said, they perform like K2 off-roading tires gripping the ground even in the worst and wettest of conditions.

GORUCK has taken this tread and placed it around the boot, not just on the forefront of the boot, but around the entire boot for maximum grip.

EXTREMELY BREATHABLE AND LIGHTWEIGHT

The MACV-2 is one of the most breathable and lightweight tactical boots on the market today, and I absolutely love them.

After having worn them for the better part of a year now, I can say firsthand that they feel as light as a feather compared to the majority of the other tactical boots I have worn.

In the summer months, the lack of a mesh liner and a thin yet tough suede upper really helps keep the feet cool and comfortable.

RUCKING TOE BOX IS AWESOME

I honestly can’t say enough about the widened toe box, but to keep it short and sweet, as I have hit on this a couple of times already…it’s awesome

LACES CONTINUE TO BREAK

The only thing I have an issue with for the MACV-2 is the thinner-than-normal 3mm laces. They function great, making the quick lace system work really well.

However, they break and tear SUPER easily. I have gone through a couple of pairs already.

The constant pulling through the metal lace loops causes them to fray and snap within about 3 months, giving them a very short lifespan.

Ordering a couple of extra laces to have at home or in your backpack is a must.
