ARE THE AKU PILGRIM DS COMBAT BOOTS WORTH YOUR HARD-EARNED CASH?
Yes. The AKU Pilgrim DS Combat Boots are absolutely worth buying, delivering breathability, rock-solid support, and all-day comfort that make them a top pick for crushing it in the harshest desert or mountain environments.
OVERALL OPINION
Hands down, the AKU Pilgrim DS Combat boots are some of the best boots I have ever worn and are a favourite among combat arms soldiers in the Canadian military, if that’s saying anything.
They are incredibly comfortable overall, from the sole to the ankle support. The reinforced toe and heel, as well as the full-grain leather lace loops and tongue, ensure extreme strength and durability.
The upper metal lace loops offer a quick lace system to finish tying up your boots, and the lace lock system ensures that as you tie up your boots, they stay tight and locked in.
AKU’s custom AIR 8000 upper fabric does a reasonably good job of keeping your feet cooler and not that sweaty, but they are not jungle boot-level airy.
The full-grain leather does make the Pilgrim DS harder to break in initially, but after a couple of weeks, they’re just fine.
Thankfully, even in the initial break-in period, they are still extremely comfortable and pleasant to wear; they’re just quite stiff.
Overall, one of my favourite pairs of boots.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Definitely the first two things that stood out to me about the AKU Pilgrim DS combat boots were the build quality, specifically the full-grain leather and reinforced toe and heel, and the slickness of the whole boot.
I wasn’t sure if I was a big fan of the look of the reinforced toe and heel at first; it honestly looked kind of funny to me (although it has grown on me over time, and I quite like it now).
I really liked the reinforced lace loops, as I find that, quite often, fabric lace loops can be one of the first parts of a boot that wear down.
I was also a big fan of the metal lace lock and the really deep lugs on the bottom of the boot. I do my boots tight for work, especially if I’m in the field and having a lace lock ensures the laces won’t slip as I’m tying them.
So, even though I wasn’t sure how I felt about the toe and heel on first impressions, overall the boot looked awesome and rugged, and I couldn’t wait to really put them to the test.

HOW DO THEY HANDLE IN THE FIELD?
So, since I first purchased the AKU Pilgrim Combat boots, I have been able to put a lot of miles on them, and I have spent countless hours in the field with them.
They have performed to the next level and then some. They are durable, tough, rugged, and extremely comfortable. Oh boy, are they comfy.
The ankle and foot support works great and feels good, whether you’re on a long ruck or trucking through the wilderness. My feet have never hurt while wearing them or after spending long hours in them.
The deep lugs and rubber soles also function great on all terrain, giving you a firm grip and confidence on even the most unstable surfaces.
In the end, the AKU Pilgrim Combat boots are excellent in the field, and a fantastic boot for anyone looking to get rough and take on the challenges of war or just the great outdoors.

TERRAIN, CLIMATE, LOAD
Below is AKU’s evaluation of the terrain, climate, and weight which the Pilgrim DS Combat boots perform and function best.
I would disagree with the terrain evaluation. Although that may be what they were created for, I have worn the Pilgrim DS in all terrains, including alpine terrain, and they have performed exceptionally.
I didn’t have any issue with grip, they were solid as I moved up the rocks, and I had no problems with potential ankle rolls.
Being a hot weather boot, I have yet to wear them in the Canadian winter, but they do perform very well in hot weather. Although they are not as breathable as a jungle boot.
And for load, you can wear them with any amount of weight on your back and your feet are comfortable and good to go. My standard full ruck weighs about 100-110 lbs, and again, I have had no foot issues while wearing them.

QUALITY AND DESIGN
MATERIAL
AKU really focused on comfort, breathability and moisture wicking in the creation of the Pilgrim Combat boots. The entire upper and tongue are made from their AIR 8000 synthetic material.
Designed by AKU to be durable, breathable, and fast-drying, the AIR 8000 material is said to be 11.5 times more breathable than other standard synthetic materials used in tactical boots.
The toe, heel and around the laces are reinforced with full-grain leather, which provides maximum durability and toughness.
The soles are Vibram Foura mountain soles, a specially designed antistatic nitrile rubber compound that offers oil and heat resistance in compliance with industry standards.

LACE SYSTEM
AKU went with fully closed lace loops on the lower part of the boot to reduce and eliminate rope snagging and meet tactical standards for airborne special forces.

The upper of the boot features a metal loop quick lace system for fast and easy tightening around your ankles.
One of the most significant issues I have run into with this metal style of loop is the loop itself tearing right out of the boot. However, after wearing these for over a year now, they have not shown any signs of tearing in the least.
This speaks highly of the quality of AKU boots and the materials they use.

One of my absolute favourite aspects of the Pilgrim DS boots is the metal lace lock loops. When I am in the field I like my boots tight, when your travling by foot with a heavy load for a long distance its a must.
Having these lace lock loops ensures that when you pull your laces tight, they stay tight.
In comparison with jungle boots, for example, most jungle boots don’t have a lace lock, so as you tighten them, they quite often release and become loose.
So, not only do the Pilgrim DS Combat boots have a lace lock, they also work exceptionally well. Once you tighten your boots up to the lock, the laces don’t come loose at all.

WEBBING
The Pilgrim DS Combat boots don’t offer any extra webbing on the rear of the boot, which is added to some boots to increase fabric strength and ankle support.
It isn’t, however, needed as the synthetic material and full-grain leather reinforcement offer plenty of both strength and ankle support.

TONGUE
The tongue offers a full gusset right up to the top of the boot, which is crucial in tactical boots for preventing sand and debris from entering the boot through the lace area.
When you’re in the woods for days on end or any outdoor environment stuff just te to work its way into your boots somehow, these gussets though really help to prevent it.

REINFORCED TOE AND HEEL
The heel and toe of the Pilgrim Combat boots are reinforced with a resin dipped plysester insert to meet the Satra TM 83 2009 shape retention standard for safety, protection, and compression strength of a domed object.
All that to say, there isn’t a hardened object in the toe box like a boot with steel or composite toes, but the reinforced material offers more protection than your standard boot with just nylon covering the toe.

The heel has the same resin-dipped polyester insert protecting your heel and Achilles tendon area.

MIDSOLE
For the midsole, AKU went with die-cut EVA. It provides an extra layer of cushioning between the outsole and insole, adding comfort and support.
It also helps with shock absorption, which in turn helps reduce fatigue of the wearer.

SOLE
As I stated earlier, the soles are Vibram Foura mountain soles, a specially designed antistatic nitrile rubber compound that offers oil and heat resistance in compliance with industry standards.
What I didn’t mention before is AKU’s Elica Natural Stride System. According to AKU, this is a system of integrated components of the whole overall sole, the last, insole board, midsole, and outsole.
AKU says it was designed to follow the natural anatomical shape of the human foot and its biomechanics.
Aiming to improve comfort, stability, and weight distribution by reducing pressure points, encouraging natural movement, and minimizing foot impact.
The system is designed to replicate the natural heel and forefoot inclination of the foot, promoting a more efficient and fatigue-free walking experience, especially under heavy loads or on technical terrain.
Now, I am not a scientist, but what I can confirm from much use is that these boots offer all of that.

FUNCTIONALITY
STRONG STITCHING
All over the Pilgrim DS Combat boot, AKU put reinforced double stitching, which is really important, as the number one most common thing that fails on boots and tactical gear is the stitching.
The double stitching adds a lot of strength to tactical gear in areas where material is held together. Specifically, boots require reinforced stitching on the sides, as these areas are the most common sites of blowouts.
The next most common spot is right along the laces. All the stress from pulling laces tight can cause the loops to tear away from the boots.
On the Pilgrim Combat boots, these are the two main places AKU has placed this reinforced stitching. This is outstanding to see, as it shows a lot of thought and care to build up, generally, the weakest spots on a tactical boot.

DURABLE BUILD
AKU put a lot of thought into the durability of the Pilgrim Combats. All of the spots where boots would typically fail have been reinforced with strong and much more durable material than fabric alone.
With the resin-dipped polyester insert along the toe, sides, and heel and full-grain leather along the laces, the boots are protected from wear and tear and general abrasion.
The full-grain leather along the laces was actually one aspect I was quite pleased to see, as I have had my fabric lace loops tear on numerous different boots, again because I really snug my boots up when I wear them.
Overall, AKU did a great job making these boots strong and durable.

BREATHABLE
Thanks to AKU’s AIR 8000 material, the Pilgrim Combats are pretty breathable. Now they aren’t as breathable as a good jungle boot like the Salomon XA Forces Jungle boot or GORUCK MAC-V 2’s.
However, as far standard arid, hot weather boots go the AKU’s are fantastic. I have worn them for days on end in plus 35-45 degree weather and never had my feet over heat.

COMFORT
If most women could have the same number of shoes as I have tactical boots, they’d be able to open their own shoe store (kidding…kinda), but I have a ton of tactical boots, and I have worn even more during my career.
And in all the boots I have worn, these stand out as one of the absolute most comfortable pairs of boots I have ever worn and maybe…maybe even the most comfortable.
Whether on a big ruck or days on end of training in the field, the top of the foot and ankle padding, as well as the sole, made it no problem to leave the boots on for hours or days at a time.
Regardless of terrain whether it be arid sand or mountounis alpine the boots remained snug and comfortable as if part of my own body.

WHAT I LIKE BEST
STINKING COMFORTABLE
Alright, so I have said this a few times already, but I am going to beat a dead horse here. The AKU Pilgrim DS Combat tactical boots are one of, if not the most, comfortable boots I have worn in my career.
I have worn them days and weeks on end, barely taking them off, and on top of that, I wear them civi side all the time as well, and my feet feel great.
I can’t overstate that. They truly are incredibly comfortable.

CONCERNS AND CRITICISMS
With every piece of gear I review, I strive to be as critical as possible when analyzing it. Because of this, I nearly always come away with something that could be made better or changed.
With the AKU Pilgrim DS Combat boot, however, I can honestly say there was nothing that I didn’t like about them. They are all around a fantastic boot.
I got nothing for once.

CONCLUSION
After putting the AKU Pilgrim DS Combat Boots through their paces, it’s clear they’re a standout choice for anyone facing unforgiving terrain.
Their lightweight build, stellar breathability from the AIR8000 fabric, and rock-solid Vibram Foura sole deliver the perfect blend of comfort and durability, whether you’re on a tactical mission or gruelling hike.
These boots aren’t just gear—they’re a reliable partner that won’t quit when the going gets tough.
If you’re after footwear that can handle desert heat, rocky trails, and long-haul missions without missing a step, the Pilgrim DS Combat boots deserve a spot in your kit.
Lace them up and take on the challenge with confidence.
